The AEK-971 assault rifle is a 5.45mm automatic combat firearm. Intended to arm personnel of army formations.
The automatics system is accomplished through a balanced layout: a mobile mechanism is divided into two parts of approximately equal weight, each being set in motion from a common gas-engine. The movements of these parts are differently directed and coordinated in velocities, their impacts in the extreme positions being synchronized. Due to this the vibrations from the moving parts and impulses from the working gas- engine are not transmitted to the weapon body during firing. This gives the shooter a feeling of "soft" recoil. The characteristics of consistency of fire improve by 15-20% as compared to that of the well-known AK-74 assault rifle.
The possibility of an involuntary reloading of the assault rifle with the safety device in the "off" position when striking the stock is excluded (as it happens when operating the AK-74 assault rifle).
There is a possibility of firing in single shots, by automatic fire and in short bursts with a cut-off of three rounds.
The assault rifle features a modern design and is easy to fire.
